Steve was interviewed by Reggie Boyle at the San Jose clinic on May 29 and offered some new details on the upcoming SMB album:
"I think it's going to be called 'Out Standing in Their Field'. The cover's going to be a picture of us standing in a field. My field! It's a little play on words. Nothing too serious. it's different styles of music. Something similar to "Southern Steele." it's just a 2009 version of what we'd do if we were doing another album. It's not earth shattering that it's some new genre of music. As far touring on the album, that's difficult. For these gigs we need months of lead time for the promoter to advertise the gigs. For some reason with Deep Purple they're always changing their schedule at the last minute. That makes it difficult to book shows."

Good news for SMB fans! Progress is being made on the new CD. Here's what Steve has to say about the projects he's currently working on:
The new Steve Morse Band CD is shaping up nicely. We have 10 songs, ranging from a classical guitar/bass piece to a Bluegrass instrumental, and of course, many tracks reminiscent of the style on 'Southern Steel'. Van will be recording his final drum parts next week, and we should have enough put together to send some song excerpts to the record labels interested in releasing the project.
The solo album that I recorded with Sarah Spencer, called 'Angelfire' is planned to be released by early Fall on Radiant records. This is a label affiliated with Neal Morse and Kerry Livgren, administered by Bill Evans. There will be I tunes style downloads available, physical CD's delivered, and the usual stock in audiophile recording stores only. We will have a preview section available and linked up as soon as Bill Evans says it's ready. Sarah has the kind of smooth, beautiful voice that makes for a welcome contrast to the harsh realities of life, but she can really sing anything. I simply chose to write the type of music that I would like to hear her sing, and it still blows me away with how good she sounds.
Please stay tuned to this page for more updates!

Steve, Dave and Van have recently been recording tracks for the upcoming album from Sarah Spencer, the talented teen vocalist Steve's been writing and recording with. Although Dave and Van will be playing on this album, it's not a typically high energy SMB project. The album will be mostly acoustic, but much of it defies a label. The main goal is to make beautiful music that suits Sarah's incredible vocals.
The guys are still planning to record a new SMB project that will be closer in style to something like "Stressfest", but have only mapped out a few track ideas at the moment.
Further news on both projects will follow.
Andy West will be playing some shows in August with his band fwap. More details can be found here.

If all goes according to the plan, the first proper Steve Morse career retrospective will see the light of day as a CD release later in the year. The producers are currently facing the difficult task of assembling a tracklist tracing Steve's career all the way back to the early days of the Dixie Dregs up until present time. A tracklist that is sure to please both old and new fans.
We would like you to be part of the process. Please send us a list of the 30 tracks you would like to see featured on the release. All suggestions will be considered, but we are told the plan is to predominantly feature Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band & solo tracks on the release. Please have your lists sent to us by May 31. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have in the meantime.
Steve will start doing monthly columns for Guitar World shortly. More details as they become available.

Message from Steve:
I am sure that most of you don't know this: recently, my friend and bandmate Rod Morgenstein lost his wife. With heroic spirit, both Rod and Michele fought a long, hard battle against Michele's breast cancer. In her life, Michele was an incredible and inspiring person to me and many others.
Now, drummer and Berklee grad Kevin Fortunato is participating in a 60-mile, 3-day breast cancer walk for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, to honor Michele's memory, and to help others who need a cure.
Through Kevin's breast cancer walk webpage, you can donate as little as $5 to this worthy cause and you will receive a receipt for tax purposes. Please list your name on the honor roll -- and don't forget to specify "In Honor (or in Memory of) Michele Morgenstein" when that option appears (it comes up toward the end of the donation process).
Click here for all the info and to donate to Kevin's great effort.
Thanks to everyone!
